As an interior designer, I'm always exposed to the newest trends and enduring styles in home decor. However, popularity doesn't always equal suitability when it comes to creating a well-designed modern interior. Some homeowners believe they're saving money by ignoring design issues. Here I explore 5 things that you just won't find in my designs or my home.
Popcorn Ceilings:
Popcorn ceilings are no longer in style, as they were trendy in the mid-1900s but are now considered outdated.
The texture was commonly used to hide flaws in drywall and taping, which is viewed as a quick fix rather than a sign of good craftsmanship. Additionally, its heavy texture can clash with other design features, particularly in rooms with low ceilings.

Unframed Posters:
Nothing screams "dorm room" like tacked-up posters. If you love a print, invest in proper framing to elevate its look.
Unframed posters have limited versatility, making it difficult to blend them into various design styles and causing potential clashes with more sophisticated decor elements in your interior design. Additionally, hanging unframed posters might give off the impression of minimal effort and lack of commitment to enhancing the overall look of your living space.

Futons:
Uncomfortable and unsightly, futons are a relic of college days. Futons have a tendency to deteriorate quicker than standard couches or beds, especially with frequent use. The mattresses can end up becoming lumpy and misaligned over time. I consider futons to be less visually appealing or elegant compared to other furniture choices in your interior design.
They are frequently linked with college dorms or temporary living situations, which can give them a less "grown-up" or refined appearance. Even though futons are designed to serve dual purposes as both seating and sleeping areas, they often don't excel at either function. They might not be as comfortable for sitting as a regular couch, nor as comfortable for sleeping as a dedicated bed.
Bed Skirts:
These frilly dust collectors are a dated concept. They're often associated with more traditional or grandmotherly decor. Bed skirts are generally not seen as contemporary or modern elements in bedroom design.
Modern bed frames or box springs can stand on their own without hiding.

Artificial Greenery:
Fake plants and fruit bowls lack the life and energy of real botanicals, if you prioritize creating genuine, natural environments.
Artificial plants can feel inauthentic and detract from a space's overall aesthetic, I always opt for live plants to enhance a living space. Also, while artificial plants don't require watering, they can collect dust and fade over time, requiring regular cleaning and eventual replacement.

Remember, great interior design balances form and function. By avoiding these simple design mistkes, you can create a space that's both beautiful and livable. What matters most is that your home reflects your personal style and meets your needs.
